Rail; economically efficient

More than half of Allport's container deliveries have been transferred to rail, reducing emissions by 60% - the equivalent of 35,000 road journeys in 2008.

Since 2005 Allport have been working with rail operators and terminals to develop strategic rail services that are practical alternatives to road transport.

Trains run daily from Felixstowe and Southampton, carrying up to 80 containers each run, to a variety of intermodal terminals in the midlands and north of the country.

Avoiding congestion at the port, rail services are lower cost, provide greater control and more deliveries each day.

Kevin Witmore, Allport operations director. "The limiting factor is customer proximity to a railhead. Distances greater than 50 miles start to negate the cost and environmental benefit. We hope that investment in new railheads will grow. From Allport's perspective we will put trains where the demand is, we are committed to developing this important mode."
